C-elves excited about Winter Break!

Celebs Explore the New World

The celebs have been studying about Colonial America and the New World they chose as their new home. America became known as the melting pot when people moved here from so many other countries like France, Germany and Great Britain. The celebs used their best baking skills to bake New World Candy. Each type of candy represented a different culture of people that came to the New World. These countries brought with them their knowledge, traditions, culture, and ways of living. Over time these have all "melted" together to create the America we have today. Check out the Paparazzi pics of our cooking experiences.

Celebs discover Fossils!

During our study of endangered and extinct animals, we always make room for some tasty edible fossils! The celebrities begin by using their excavation skills and dig for fossils via a chips ahoy cookie. Next, the celebs helped create sedimentary fossils. We used rice crispies as our bits of stone, candy corn as animal teeth, stick pretzels as bones, and mini chocolate chips as animal poop. Amber fossils were the next exploration for the celebs. By using jello, gummy bugs, and plastic eggs, the celebs created edible amber. The final fossil food were cast cookie fossils. We used sugar cookies as our base and used spiders to make our fossil imprints. After baking the fossils, the celebs enjoyed the yummy fossil treats.

Celeb's Spider Schema!

Earlier this school year, I introduced the celebrities to the concept of their schema. They really latched on to this concept and have consistently referenced their "schema files" throughout the year. I decided to incorporate some spooky spider fun into our schema learning. I gave the celebs a few minutes to write down what information they already had in their schema file on spiders. Next, they worked in trio groups to read non-fiction texts about spiders and to find three additional facts to add to their schema files. The celebrities were more than enthusiastic about finding out more creepy details about these creatures. Students were asked to record their 3 new facts on the "New Schema" strips. We even had a spider creep in to visit while the celebs were conducting their research.
Talk about spide-y senses!!
After the research was complete, the celebs shared their old and new schema with the cast and crew. They celebrated their new learning with spider rings and could now easily tell one spider fact for all 8 spider leg!
Check out the paparazzi pics of our creepy, spider schema search...

Pumpkin carving is a long, lasting Harkreader Hills tradition. You can't have Halloween in Harkreader Hills without a jack-o-lantern. The students secretly created their ultimate jack-o-lantern designs. We then voted on which design we liked the best. Jacie's cat design was chosen as the jack-o-lantern winning creation. The students named him, Billy Joe Bob and we have enjoyed having him as part of our celebrity cast!
