Celebs Take Cupcake Core Soil Samples

The celebrities decided to "dig a bit deeper" to learn more about soil. They spent some time performing the role of geologists investigating dirt! Geologist take core samples to find out just what can be found in each layer of soil. The celebs have already been spent some time investigating soil and knew that the bottom layer was bedrock. We used a molasses cookie to represent this layer as it is super hard! Their next layer of soil is Horizon C. Their research led them to discover that this layer is composed mainly of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are just bits of broken down rocks. Marble cake mix was perfect for this layer and it was topped with mini-chocolate chips (aka sedimentary rocks). Horizon C, subsoil, was created using German chocolate cake. This layer is also made up of minerals, plant roots, twigs, dead animals/decay, and humus. We use sprinkles to represent these soil components. Their investigation required them to bake these little soil samples. Once they were done, the richest layer, Horizon A/Topsoil, was added using fudge icing. We sprinkled green sprinkles on top for grass and added a worm as the decomposer. Now that the samples are ready the soil core samples could be taken. The celebs used their special soil sample tool to collect the sample. They carefully inserted the soil tool into the sample and twisted it just slightly. When they removed it from the soil, you were able to see the different layers of the soil. These celebs are now soil sample experts! Check out the paparazzi pics of all the investigating...

There's Love in the air in Harkeader Hills

Love filled our Valentine's Day from start to finish. The celebs began by trying to capture a friend's heart with a friendly game of Conversation Heart Battleship. While the celebs took a break to get some exercise in their PE class, I noticed that 2 of my hearts were missing. When the celebs returned to Harkreader Hills they had a mystery to solve. They began by recording important mystery terms in their detective notebook. I was able to find 2 fingerprints that could help us find my missing hearts. The celebs went through extensive fingerprint training. They learned that there are 4 basic types of fingerprints and used a hand lens to investigate their own fingerprint. Finally, the search was on. The celebs were given a copy of the fingerprints left at the scene of the crime. They used their hand lens to compare the suspects fingerprints with those of the other celebs. Finally, the celebs concluded that the suspects with the matching fingerprints were Jacie and Austin. The suspects backpacks were searched and yes, the missing hearts were found. Jacie said her motivation was "chocolate" and Austin insists he was set up! We celebrated solving the mystery with Soda Shop Party. The celebs passed out their Valentine Cards and enjoyed ice cream floats fit for a star! Check out the paparazzi pics of all the Valentine's Day fun...

Star-studded Tailgaiting at Harkreader Hills

The celebrities were out is full football attire to cheer on their favorite football team. The Giants and Patriots were both well represented by the star-studded tailgaters. The Superbowl Bash began with tailgate training stations. Students designed helmet heads while exploring circumference and radius. Their cutting edge fashion skills were used to design Superbowl Symmetry Jerseys. Students practiced their quarterback and long addition skills at the Addition Pass station. They tossed the ball to their quarterback. If the pass was complete a touchdown was scored. At the end of the game, the teams added their total touchdowns to determine the winning team! Paper football was a tailgate favorite after students checked out the playbook on Sports Illustrated Kids and the NFL Kid Zone.
At the completion of the training stations, the celebrities were ready for the tailgate festivities to begin! Food was a plenty with chips and dip, pizza bites, and tasty desserts. The celebrities all showed great teamwork and sportsmanship. Let's hope the Giants and Patriots will do the same on Super Bowl Sunday. Check out the paparazzi pics of all the tailgaiting fun!

The Celebrity Snowmen

I made a little snowman, as perfect as can be
I thought I'd keep him in my room and keep
him warm like me.

But when I woke the next morning- my mind was in a muddle.
He's run away, I don't know why and left me with a puddle.

The celebs are missing the snow this winter so we decided to bring the snow to Harkreader Hills. The celebs wrote stories about what their snowman should not do. Some snowmen went to the spa or got a tan, while others drank hot cocoa or a big bowl of chili. The celebs further created their own version of their melted snowman using glue (one bottle was from my 1st year of teaching... 10 year old glue!!) and snowman pieces. Check out the paparazzi pics of these enjoyable and creative stories.
