Celebs/Geologists Soil Samples

The celebrities decided to "dig a bit deeper" to learn more about soil. They spent some time performing the role of geologists investigating dirt! Geologist take core samples to find out just what can be found in each layer of soil. The celebs have already been spent some time investigating soil and knew that the bottom layer was bedrock. We used a molasses cookie to represent this layer as it is super hard! Their next layer of soil is Horizon C. Their research led them to discover that this layer is composed mainly of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are just bits of broken down rocks. Marble cake mix was perfect for this layer and it was topped with mini-chocolate chips (aka sedimentary rocks). Horizon C, subsoil, was created using German chocolate cake. This layer is also made up of minerals, plant roots, twigs, dead animals/decay, and humus. We use sprinkles to represent these soil components. Their investigation required them to bake these little soil samples. Once they were done, the richest layer, Horizon A/Topsoil, was added using fudge icing. We sprinkled sprinkles on top for twigs and "dead stuff" and added a worm as the decomposer. Now that the samples are ready the soil core samples could be taken. The celebs used their special soil sample tool to collect the sample. They carefully inserted the soil tool into the sample and twisted it just slightly. When they removed it from the soil, you were able to see the different layers of the soil. These celebs are now soil sample experts! Check out the paparazzi pics of all the investigating...

Hats Off to our Past Presidents!

The Celebs "Look-Up" to Abe Lincoln and take their hats off to George Washington! In preparation for a Presidential Break, the celebs spent time studying about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The celebs were amazed to learn that Abraham Lincoln was 6'4" tall. Yet, with his Stovepipe hat he was even taller at 7'4" tall. Abe was not very organized but managed to keep up with important papers by keeping them in his hat. The celebs also compared themselves to George Washington when he was a student just like them. See how the celebs "measured up" to Abe Lincoln and tipped their hats to good ole' George in the paparazzi pics below...

Love is in the air!

Love was in the air at Harkreader Hills as Valentine's Day arrived. The celebs did not waste a minute of their lovely celebration and enjoyed a sweet-heart themed Minute to Win It game. They had to bite off the ends of their Twizzler to create a straw they would use to blow the pixie stick candy out of the circle. They then had to give a one-handed kiss (open their kiss with one hand and eat it) then open their m&m bag and sort them into colors while remaining one handed. The final obstacle was to solve an order of operations problem based on the colors of the m&ms. It was so fun that the celebs had to play a few rounds, just to get the hang of it-of course! The celebs just still hadn't filled their sweet-tooth quite full enough so they enjoyed creating their own ultimate ice cream floats. I believe the access to a can of whipped topping was the highlight of the float creations. They then took to reading their Fan Mail while enjoying their yummy floats. You can catch all the great photo-ops in the paparazzi pics below...

Mighty "Morphin" Power Celebs!

The celebrities have morphed into some creative writers! They have been working hard to create books for young children about metamorphosis. They began by doing research on the life cycle of a butterfly, ant, damselfly, dragonfly or frog. Next, they worked in writing teams to mesh their facts with fun and write a fictional story about metamorphosis. After some editing and revising the celebs were ready for publishing. They took create care to create illustrations that would support their facts while still holding the interest of the reader. These amazing writers created some award winning stories that helped them understand metamorphosis, as well as, the younger students reading their books. The celebs will be sharing their stories with many of our primary classes in the weeks to come. You can see a special celebrity reading in the paparazzi video snip-its below.

Super-star Super Bowl Bash

The celebrities were out is full football attire to cheer on their favorite football team. The 49'ers and Ravens were both well represented by the star-studded tailgaters. The Super Bowl Bash began with tailgate training stations. Students designed helmet heads while exploring circumference and radius. Their cutting edge fashion skills were used to design Super Bowl Symmetry Jerseys. Students practiced their quarterback and long addition skills at the Addition Pass station. They tossed the ball to their quarterback. If the pass was complete  a touchdown was scored. At the end of the game, the teams added their total touchdowns to determine the winning team! Paper football was a tailgate favorite after students checked out the playbook on Sports Illustrated Kids and the NFL Kid Zone.
At the completion of the training stations, the celebrities were ready for the tailgate festivities to begin! Food was a plenty with chips and dip, BBQ, and tasty desserts. The celebrities all showed great teamwork and sportsmanship. Let's hope the 49'ers and Ravens will do the same on Super Bowl Sunday. Check out the paparazzi pics of all the tailgaiting fun!
